W Guangzhou opens in China
Room types at W Guangzhou are Spectacular, Wonderful and Fabulous.


As it sets its sights on a larger presence in Asia, W Hotels Worldwide has opened its first hotel in mainland China in Guangzhou. The city is poised to be the next emerging destination in Asia; so for all your clients who have grown tired of Shanghai or Beijing, this could be a great place to start. The W Guangzhou made its debut in April on the Pearl River, with 317 guest rooms and suites.

The entry into the hotel starts off with a bang: A 62-foot “Luminous WaterWall” by WET Design greets guests as they enter. If your clients are making the long journey to China, we suggest booking them in one of the hotel’s Fantastic Suites, which we hear are the most requested premium accommodations. For large families, the WOW suite would also work. All rooms have 46-inch LED HD TVs, Bose surround sound system, high-speed Wi-Fi and MP3 player plug-ins. One of the top features at this hotel is the 16,000-square-foot AWAY Spa, which is the first in China. The spa is a 24/7 retreat with seven single suites, one couples suite and one WHO suite. When it’s time to dine, clients have a wide selection to choose from. The Kitchen Table is an all-day dining venue with interactive live cooking stations; I By Inagiku serves up authentic Japanese cuisine; Yan Yu offers Cantonese cuisine; and Fei Ultralounge invites guests to sip champagne by the glass, along with molecular cocktails and other in-house creations. Guests can also imbibe at the signature WOOBAR. 

Getting There: The hotel is a 40-minute drive from the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. Guests can arrange for a transfer to the hotel with the hotel’s limo service.

When in Town

Now that your clients are actually in Guangzhou, what exactly can they do? The capital of Guangdong Province, Guangzhou is a great example of history meeting modern amenities. For starters, travelers can visit the Canton Tower (formerly known as the Guangzhou TV Astronomical and Sightseeing Tower), the tallest structure in China and the fourth-tallest freestanding edifice in the world. The rooftop has an outdoor observatory, more than 1,470 feet above the ground. Then there’s the scenic White Cloud Mountain or Baiyun Mountain with its six sightseeing zones. Visitors can learn about the history and culture of the area at the Guangdong Provincial Museum and the Guangdong Museum of Folk Art. If there are kids in tow (or if you are simply young at heart) stop by Chime-Long Paradise, which is China’s largest amusement park with more than 70 rides and attractions.

The Temple of the Six Banyan Trees, an ancient Buddhist temple dating back 1,500 years, is also near the hotel. Lastly, foodies will love Guangzhou because it is the home of Cantonese cuisine.

A Note on W

W Hotels Worldwide is on track to nearly double its Asian presence by the end of 2018. The luxury chain is planning to open 20 W hotels and retreats in nine countries in the region. More than half of the W brand’s global pipeline is slated for Asia Pacific. 

Other China openings will include hotels in Beijing, Shanghai, Changsha and Suzhou over the next five years. Hotels will also open in India, Indonesia and Malaysia.
