Mayakoba Resorts in Mexico Signs With Sustainable Tourism Program

June 2, 2010 By: Joe Pike

Three of Mayakoba's hotels in the Riviera Maya, Mexico signed on to participate in the sustainable tourism program created by the international conservation organization the Rainforest Alliance, in conjunction with the Mesoamerican Reef Tourism Initiative (MARTI).

The hotels intend to implement a series of best management practices based on the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria. This agreement is a joint effort between MARTI, Mayakoba and the Rainforest Alliance, and will remain in effect for one year.

By signing the agreement, the hotel pledged to continuously seek out ways to mitigate the negative impacts their hotels Fairmont Mayakoba, Rosewood Mayakoba and Banyan Tree Mayakoba might otherwise generate in the region, as well as to improve their socio-cultural and economic management.

The initiative is extremely positive news for the environment and sets a model example for other similar businesses to follow, considering that Cancun and the Riviera Maya are such highly frequented tourist destinations. The positive changes will be seen throughout the 250 acres of land the Mayakoba oversees.
