Martinique Plans for a U.S. Hotel Invasion

February 11, 2010 By: Joe Pike

It’s been roughly 45 years since Martiniques last U.S.-branded hotel opened in the form of the now-extinct Hilton in the late ‘60s, but Travel Agent got word Thursday morning that the island is looking to bring an American brand or two back.

We met with Muriel Wiltord-Latamie, director for the U.S and Latin America for the Martinique Promotion Bureau, who told us the destination is still engaged in heated discussions to bring a Radisson to the island.

We first learned of these plans last year. They stalled for a while, but Wiltord-Latamie says they are back on and productive.

In fact, not only is a deal for a Radisson in Martinique likely, but the promotion bureau is also optimistic about bring a Marriott on board as well, she says.

The plan for the Marriott, she says, would to have it open in Fort-de-France, Martinique’s tourism hub.

“We realize how important it is for international promotion to have a U.S. brand in Martinique,” she says, “so this is something we are really hoping gets done.”
