Maui Ocean Center Unveils June Calendar of Events

Maui Ocean Center, The Hawaiian Aquarium welcomes the summer season with a variety of ocean-themed activities. 

In June, the Aquarium will host a "Sleep with the Sharks Family Sleepover," providing families with the unique opportunity to explore the park at night and sleep alongside the exhibits. 

Maui Ocean Center will join the world in celebration of World Oceans Day by highlighting resource conservation efforts, showing educational films, and sharing ocean-friendly practices. This annual event will feature live entertainment, non-profit organization and eco-company booths, Hawaiian cultural practitioners and more.

World Oceans Day

Wednesday, June 8 from  9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Maui Ocean Center will join the world in recognizing World Oceans Day by celebrating Hawaii’s marine life and inspiring conservation action. The World Oceans Day theme for 2016 is “Healthy Planet, Healthy Ocean.” Maui Ocean Center will feature educational films in the Undersea Cave Theater, live entertainment, Na Mo‘olelo cultural activities and more. 

Sleep with the Sharks: Summer Family Sleepover

Friday, June 17  from 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. (following day)

Roll out your sleeping bags next to the Open Ocean exhibit or Sea Jellies cylinder at Maui Ocean Center’s next family sleepover. Sleep with the Sharks offers guests the unique opportunity to explore the aquarium exhibits after dark, engage in hands-on marine life activities, see the animals’ nocturnal behavior, assist with feeding the animals at Turtle Lagoon and Hammerhead Harbor and more. 

For ages 6-13, each child must be accompanied by an adult 21 years or older. The cost is $75 plus tax and includes marine naturalist guided activities, movie time snacks, continental breakfast, a souvenir decal and all day admission to the aquarium the next day. Special rates for members are available. Reservations are required; space is limited. Call 808-270-7075. Sleepover activities are subject to change.

Behind-The-Scenes Tour   

Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays  from 11:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m.

Go behind the scenes with a marine naturalist to learn about Hawaii’s sharks and turtles, explore the aquarium laboratory, and assist with a feeding at Hammerhead Harbor and Turtle Lagoon. Children ages 13 and under must be accompanied by a paying adult. Shark Dive Maui

Monday through Friday. Check-in time is 8:15 a.m.

Maui Ocean Center’s Shark Dive Maui program allows SCUBA certified guests ages 15 and up to dive among the aquarium’s sharks, rays and tropical fish in the 750,000-gallon Open Ocean exhibit. This educational experience teaches guests about the significance of mano (sharks) in Hawaiian culture as well as the critical role that sharks play in the marine ecosystem. Book online at www.mauioceancenter.com/tickets or call 808-270-7075 for reservations.
