Napili Kai Beach Resort, located on Maui’s Napili Bay, has completed a comprehensive five million dollar renovation of its oceanfront Puna Point building. A similar renovation to the adjacent oceanfront Puna 2 building was completed in December 2009 and received the Building Industry of Hawaii’s Renaissance Award of Merit in 2010.The renovation of both buildings was completed under the direction of Lars Wernars, president of Cutting Edge Development, a specialist in eco-building, historic preservation and green renovation.
The Puna Point and Puna 2 buildings are made up of oceanfront studios and one-bedroom suites with kitchens and private lanais, overlooking the sea with impressive views and bordered by tropical gardens. The project included refurbishment to the building exteriors, as well as complete renovation and upgrade of all baths and kitchens with bamboo, mahogany, or cherry cabinetry, granite countertops and new, upscale kitchenware.
The project was carried out with an eye towards environmental sensitivity and energy conservation and efficiency, including new electrical wiring and insulation of walls and ceilings; installation of ceiling fans, Energy-Star kitchen appliances, and low-flow plumbing fixtures; and an upgraded sewer system. Incandescent light bulbs were replaced with LED (light emitting diode) lighting.
The old inefficient air-conditioning was replaced with a variable-flow refrigerant system with a magnetic sensor. Hall doors are equipped with louvers to capture the cooling trade winds, sunshades on sliding glass doors minimize glare, and the double panes, insulated with argon gas, reduce heat. An HVAC (heating, ventilating and air-conditioning) system allows filtered air in and moves stale air out. Throughout the renovation, all reusable materials, appliances, furniture, and fixtures were either donated to employees and Maui charities or refurbished and recycled through local businesses.
