A Weekend in Mexico City

Only four and a half hours from New York City, Mexico City is quickly growing as a potential “weekend getaway” for U.S. travelers. Travel Agent recently flew in from New York on Interjet, which just this summer began JFK-Mexico City service. We arrived in the Mexican capital at 11:30 a.m. Friday morning and hit the ground running.

Following a day tour of the Interjet facilities in Toluca, Mexico, we were whisked off to the city center to take in its thriving museum scene. We visited the National Museum of Anthropology and toured the Zocalo (formally known as Plaza de la Constitucion), where we saw the National Palace, the Cathedral and the Grand Temple

Guests in town for a quick weekend jaunt won’t want to miss the Soumaya Museum, which opened in 2011. It houses 66,000 pieces of the private collection of the Carlos Slim Foundation.

Suggest clients also make it a point to visit the colorful Coyoacan district, home to Casa Azul, the Frida Kahlo Museum. Travelers should spend the day walking the thriving streets, sampling local food, visiting markets and stopping at the historic cathedral.

Travel Agent spent the weekend at the Sheraton Maria Isabel Hotel & Towers in Mexico City’s Distrito Federal, one of the most centrally located neighborhoods in the city. The hotel offers 755 guest rooms, all with high-speed wireless Internet. A pool, fitness center, pulsing Jorongo Bar and a selection of restaurants round out the hotel.

Sheraton Club guests have access to The Club Lounge, which offers complimentary breakfast, evening hors d’oeuvres and a selection of beverages. Those staying in the luxurious Towers section of the hotel can enjoy a panoramic view of the city from the 18th floor Towers Lounge.

More than a dozen other major international hotel chains also have properties in Mexico City.

Flying on Interjet

We took the return Interjet flight to New York at 4:40 p.m. Sunday afternoon and made it home in time for a full night’s sleep and ready to go to work on Monday.

Interjet began flying on December 5, 2005, with a fleet of three Airbus A320s. Today the airline has 35 A320s and is anticipated to end the year with 37. In addition to the service from JFK, Inter-jet flies to Mexico City from Miami, San Antonio, and Orange County, CA.

Interjet is one of the most economical options for travelers looking to fly to Mexico. On its flights between Mexico City and New York, passengers are served complimentary meals and premium beverages. Snacks and beverages are served on other international flights. Interjet also offers transferable tickets, a frequent flier loyalty program, in-flight entertainment program and magazine, an unrestricted 20 percent discount year-round for seniors, and special amenities for female travelers, including women-only toilets on all airplanes.

In contrast with other carriers, there is no extra charge for passengers to select seats or check up to 110 pounds of baggage per ticket. Interjet does not overbook its flights and has no hidden fees in the ticket prices; the price offered by the airline is what the customer pays, including all taxes.
