Cancun Returns to Normal Following Tropical Storm RinaOctober 28, 2011 By: Joe Pike
The Cancun Convention and Visitors Bureau announced Friday that Tropical Storm Rina has moved away from the Cancun coast line and, most recently, was downgraded to a tropical depression. There are currently no reports of damage due to the storm and the destination is officially fully-operational.
Due to a local culture that is focused on prevention and preparedness in times like these, Cancun has protection agencies, counseling, and outreach programs to provide support at local, state and federal levels; working together with hotels and tourist services of the private sector to safeguard and inform the locals and visitors on the development of such storms.
Currently, the Cancun International Airport is open and functioning normally; it is important to note that at no time was it deemed necessary to close the airport due to the storm. The airport's operations have not been stalled by any weather complications, with 37 flights reported Thursday and 187 programed for Friday.
Cancun entered a state of alert upon the possible arrival of Rina, but was unaffected by the slow moving storm that was downgraded from a category 3 hurricane to a tropical depression before nearing the Mexican Caribbean coast line.
Moreover, as of 10 a.m. today, boats have resumed crossings Puerto Juárez-Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen-Cozumel and Chiquilá-Holbox. Cozumel airport along with the ferry boats and cruise ships are all operating normally.
The destination is in perfect condition and its tourism activities have been reactivated. The hotels, parks, eco-tourism, tours and archaeological sites opened today and with a few attractions scheduled to open Saturday morning.
