Frida Kahlo Exhibition in Queretaro

The “Heart of Frida,” a collection of writings and drawings by Frida Kahlo, will open January 11 at the Queretaro Art Museum, located in the city center of Queretaro, about 125 miles from Mexico City.

The “Heart of Frida” comprises 37 intimate notes and letters and six drawings by Mexico’s most famous woman artist that had been hidden for over half a century in Mexico City until discovered in a traditional Michoacan lacquered box with the letters “FK” on the lid and “Coyoacan Frida Kahlo 1950” handpainted on the inner lid. Last year, the collection was seen by more than 5,000 visitors to the Casa Maxwell Gallery in San Miguel de Allende. A web site about the items also was created,

For the opening in Queretaro on January 11, Arturo Garcia Bustos and his wife, Rina Lazo, will give a short talk. Bustos, who authenticated the collection, is one of “Los Fridos” (students of Frida Kahlo) and a distinguished Mexican muralist.

The exhibit will be open to the public every day except Monday through February 24. The Queretaro airport is served by Continental and Aeromar. Guanajuato-Leon airport, an hour and 40 minutes from Queretaro, has direct service from the U.S. on American, Continental, Mexicana and Aeromexico.
