October 10, 2011 By: Josey Bartlett

Hurricane Jova has strengthened to a Category 3 hurricane and is barreling towards Mexico’s Pacific Coast as of Monday. The storm has altered the path of two cruise ships sailing near Mexico’s western coast.

The National Weather Service predicts the eye of the storm will hit the coast of Mexico Tuesday afternoon or evening. Also by Tuesday evening the hurricane could swell to a Category 4.

NWS issued a hurricane warning from Punta San Telmo to Cabo Corrientes. South of Punta San Telmo to Lazaro Cardenas is affected by a tropical storm warning.

Jova, with winds currently up to 125 mph, could produce 5 to 10 inches of rain. According to NWS, the rain could cause “life threatening floods and mudslides.” The hurricane could also produce dangerous waves on the coast of southwestern Mexico.

Becuase of the conditions two cruise ships have altered their Mexican Riviera itineraries: the Carnival Spirit and the Disney Wonder, reported USA Today and Cruise Critic. The Carnival Spirit will avoid Cabo San Lucas until Wednesday but leave a day early. This adds Ensenada and La Paz to the schedule. The Disney Wonder will visit Cabo San Lucas on Tuesday instead of Puerto Vallarta.

In the meantime Tropical Storm Irwin, with winds of 40 mph, lost steam. The NWS predicts the storm will not hit land.
