Tropical Storm Dora could become a major hurricane Wednesday with winds currently forecasted at more than 110 mph as it heads offshore of Mexico, prompting officials in the Mexican towns of Guerrero and Oaxaca to begin taking precautionary measures, the Associated Press reports.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said the storm was centered about 265 miles south of Puerto Angel and it was moving west-northwest at 15 mph with top sustained winds near 70 mph.
In Guerrero, the government was preparing nearly 900 shelters in flood-prone areas along the coast, which includes Acapulco, and in Oaxaca, authorities closed at least two beaches where the storm is expected to hit the hardest, according to the report.
The news is less severe for the second tropical storm reported this week as Tropical Storm Bret was forecast to weaken in the Atlantic as it moves northeast away from the Bahamas and well off the U.S. Atlantic coast.
