On Site - Los Cabos Offers More Airlift and Luxury Hotels

PUEBLA, Mexico - Travel Agent is on location this week in Puebla, Mexico as part of Tianguis Turistico 2013. Yesterday, March 18, we met with Eduardo Segura Vehovec, managing director of Los Cabos Tourism to get the scoop on what's new in the destination.

The big news in Los Cabos is the slew of new airlift offerings and hotel developments currently in the works. "We will increase the number of seats flying to Los Cabos by 44,000," he tells Travel Agent. Beginning June 2, Southwest Airlines will begin daily service between Auston-Bergstrom International Airport and Los Cabos through AirTran Airways.

This month, AirTran Airlines added a direct flight from Denver to Los Cabos. This new flight option follows the addition of another new direct flight from the Orange County gateway from AirTran, which launched in 2012.

Spirit will launch non-stop service between Dallas/Forth Worth and Los Cabos in June 2013. The service will be available four times per week (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday).

Los Cabos is also gearing up to welcome brand-new luxury resorts to the destination. "There are 1500 rooms under construction over the next two years," says Vehovec. "Los Cabos is not looking for mass tourism. We are looking for quality."

The Delano Los Cabos will open in 2014 with 114 rooms and 23 residences, as well as a modern restaurant and spa.

El Ganzo, a 72-room boutique oceanfront property recently opened its doors at the marina in Puerto Los Cabos.

Ritz-Carlton has formally announced a Ritz-Carlton Reserve property to be built in Los Cabos. The resort will have 124 private, single-story and oceanfront villas, each with panoramic views of the Sea of Cortez.

We also unofficially heard that Montage is in discussion to open a resort in the destination, though that has not been confirmed.
