The Associated Press reports that the Texas Department of Public Safety is advising students to avoid vacationing in Mexico this spring break in light of the ongoing drug violence that has tarnished the country’s tourism reputation for the last two years.
According to the report, a DPS statement Tuesday cited the continued violence and also urged boaters to stay on the U.S. side of Falcon Lake.
It includes a few recent examples of where Americans were killed in Mexico, including the murder of Immigration and Customs Special Agent Jaime Zapata on Feburary 15. The report also cites the fatal shooting of a missionary, Nancy Davis, on January 26 and the fatal shooting of David Hartley on September 30 while sightseeing on Falcon Lake.
In the report, DPS Director Steven McCraw says that while drug cartel violence is most severe in northern Mexico, it's prominent in other parts of the country, including resort areas such Cancun and Acapulco.
