Tourism Updates from Mexico's Sun Triangle

Mexico's Sun Triangle destinations are revving up for a booing second half of 2013 and an even more successful 2014. In June Travel Agent attended a press conference in New York City where government officials filled in members of the media on what is going on in the destination, which includes Acapulco, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo and Taxco.

Approximately $200 million is being invested in the renovation of infrastructure in the main tourist zone in downtown Acapulco. This will include the completion of the Escenica Avenue and a Macrotunnel, which will connect the Navy Base-Playa Icacos to the Diamond Zone. Looking at Acapulco in the future, Mundo Imperial has renewed its investment of $27 million in the construction of EXPO Mundo Imperial. When it is completed, the complex will include an 800-suite resort, open-air Promenade, Spa and a concert hall.

Questions of Safety: The panel of officials did not shy away from the obvious issue of safety in Mexico. We were told that as part of continued safety measures, Governor of Guerrero Angel Aguirre Rivero implemented a multi-million dollar investment from the state, which has been designated for use in the purchase of new police equipment and training in advanced security techniques. Nine million visitors visit Acapulco each year.

In Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, Sunwing Airlines recently launched two new flights to the destination from Toronto and Montreal. They will be available from December 16, 2013 through March 31, 2014. Also, the fourth phase of a rehabilitation project for the image of Zihuatanejo of Azueta was launched. This projects is designed to renovate iconic locations throughout the destination.

Finally, in Taxco, the colonial city is gearing up to install a series of special lighting and illumination on temples, plazas, streets and alleyways to make Taxco, the 'City of Lights," glow by night.
