Philadelphia Welcomes Virgin America

April 4, 2012 By: Danielle Stepongzi

Philadelphia was proud to welcome Virgin America's first flight on April 4 with a "tailgate on the tarmac" celebration including Mayor Michael A. Nutter and Virgin Group Founder Sir Richard Branson.

Virgin America, one of the few growing U.S. airlines, has expanded to 17 destinations, a fleet of 50 new aircraft and over 2,500 teammate since its launch in August 2007. The airline plans to add approximately 200-500 new jobs on an annual basis over the next three to five years - including local Philadelphia jobs created by the new service.

In honor of the inaugural flight, Virgin America teamed up with Gilt Taste to offer guests a unique Philly-inspired menu of Dutch chocolates, soft pretzels and cheesecake desserts.  Following the flight, the festivities continued at Hotel Palomar in downtown Philadelphia with Philly's own DJ Jazzy Jeff.

Virgin America's PHL schedule will include three daily nonstop flights from LAX and two daily nonstop flights from SFO (as of April 10th). Connecting flights are also available from PHL to the airline's Portland (as of June 5th), San Diego, Seattle and Las Vegas markets.

In honor of its newest route, Virgin America this week launches a "Liberating" network-wide fare sale. PHL-LAX fares start from $159 and PHL-SFO fares start from $179 (restrictions apply). For more fares:  Tickets are available for purchase now at and 1.877.FLY.VIRGIN.
