New York City hotels have seen an increased police presence in the wake of yesterday’s attack of the Hotel InterContinental Kabul in Afghanistan.

"[The security increase] is the responsibility of the city," said InterContinental Hotels Group Vice President of Corporate Communications Francie Schulwolf. A spokesman from The New York Hilton also confirmed that the security increase was implemented by the city, and not by the individual hotels or their corporate management.

"There is additional police presence in New York City," confirms the Deputy Chief of Public Information at the New York Police Department.

It is important to note that while the hotel that was attacked in Kabul is called the InterContinental, and has been reported to be a member of the brand, it has not been affiliated with the InterContinental Hotels Group since 1980. It is not yet known if there was a particular target staying at the Intercontinental, or if the target was the hotel itself.

Hotels in New York have continued their high alert status since the 2008 terrorist attack on the Taj Mahal Palace hotel in Mumbai, and yesterday’s attack has served to increase the number of officers in the city’s hotels.

Increases in security measures have been marked since 2008, specifically in the areas of surveillance cameras and officers trained in the use of heavy weapons.
