The Windy City's Daredevil Balconies Open Today

July 2, 2009 By: Megan Stride Travel Agent

Chicago's Sears Tower, already the tallest building in the U.S., now boasts another draw for visitors and city natives alike: four glass balconies on the 103rd floor.

The Ledges, as they've been nicknamed, have floors, walls and ceilings of transparent glass and hover 1,353 feet above the city streets. Starting today, visitors can step out on the balconies, four feet away from the building, and see the city's west side and the Chicago River from a startling height, all for the same regular Skydeck admission price of $14.95.

The transformation of the building will continue over the next few years with a $350 million eco-friendly makeover, officials announced last week, and the name of the famous landmark will be changed to Willis Tower later this summer.
