Families Can Monkey Around in New Hampshire this SummerJuly 14, 2009 By: Megan Stride Travel Agent
For decades, a tiny troublesome monkey and his lofty, saffron-clothed caretaker have lived in the fanciful imaginations of readers across the world. The books of Curious George's adventures with The Man in the Yellow Hat have been translated into many languages since the original story's release in 1941 and published in Denmark and Norway, Sweden and Japan, Israel and Mexico. This summer, fans will have a chance to meet the dynamic duo off the page.
Curious George and The Man in the Yellow Hat will be visiting New Hampshire's Waterville Valley Resort this August 7-9, attending the third annual Curious George Cottage Family Festival. The event is sponsored by the non-profit Margret and H.A. Rey Center and hosted by the resort, which runs the Curious George Cottage where the books' authors, the Reys, once lived. Visitors can spend the weekend enjoying a banana pancake breakfast, family nature discovery walk, fireman's barbecue lunch, a traveling barnyard, live music, face painting, games for kids, Curious George story hour and movie viewing, planetarium shows by Plymouth State University, an energy fair, family spaghetti dinner, and, of course, photo opportunities with Curious George and the Man in the Yellow Hat.
Those events, along with accommodations for Friday and Saturday night, are included in the Curious George Cottage Family Festival lodging package, starting from $56 per person per night for 4-person occupancy.
For those who simply can't wait until August, the hotel will be dedicating the Cottage's new Visitor Center on July 25, inviting families to come read Curious George stories while lounging in beanbag chairs, watch episodes of the monkey's cartoon or try to draw the characters in the style of the books' illustrator, H.A. Rey.
