Report - Allegiant Air Scraps Plans for Weekly Flights From Monterey, California, to Honolulu

The Monterey Herald reports that very low initial bookings have prompted Allegiant Air officials to cancel a much-anticipated route between Monterey, California, and Honolulu.

The flights would have been the first direct flight between these two cities and were projected to generate roughly $12 million per year in visitor expenditures, according to the Hawaii Tourism Authority.

Allegiant is reporting that officials at the Monterey Peninsula Airport were notified on Friday that the route to Honolulu International Airport, which was to have launched on November 16, did not draw the bookings that the Las Vegas-based airline had anticipated, a spokeswoman said.

Allegiant entered the Hawaii market in late June with flights to Honolulu from its Las Vegas hub and from Fresno, California and quickly announced plans to fly to Hawaii from a half dozen mainland cities, including Monterey.
