Price reduction in the contemporary cruise market is readily accepted, seen as a way to fill up ships and make up for price in onboard spend. But what about line's where onboard spend isn't as important as price? Well, one of those, Hurtigruten, which operates exploration-type cruises, is now slashing rates by 25 percent and offering free international air for guests booking suites on its Antarctica sailings in November and December.

Hurtigruten says the savings are "unprecedented"—between $3,041 to $4,694 per person for the 13-day Argentina & Antarctica and 22-day Antarctica/Falklands/South Georgia expeditions on MS Fram. Bookings must be made by March 31, 2009. Normal brochure prices of $9,618 to $16,228 are now $6,577 to $11,534 per person. Suite purchases also include a variety of add-ins such as two optional excursions and wine, beer or soda at meals.
