MSC Ends Fuel Supplement on 2009 Bookings

December 16, 2008 By: David Eisen

MSC Cruises has eliminated its fuel surcharge for all new 2009 bookings effective immediately. MSC had initially said it would end the fuel supplement on all cruises departing on or after April 1, 2009. However, stabilized fuel prices prompted MSC to end the surcharge for all 2009 bookings.

"When we implemented the fuel surcharge on our cruise fares a year ago, we did that with the belief that, when fuel charges stabilized at a level that allowed us to eliminate the supplement, we would," said Richard Sasso, president and CEO of MSC Cruises (USA), Inc.

A shipboard credit identical to the amount of the surcharge will be given to all guests already booked on a 2009 voyage with a fuel supplement.

MSC did say it would not rule out the possibility that a future re-implementation of the fuel surcharge was possible, though it reiterated its commitment that all reservations booked with a deposit prior to such a decision would be protected from any additional charge.
