Update on Oceania's Insignia Fire: Dec. 17 Cruise CancelledDecember 15, 2014 By: Susan Young
In an update on Monday, Oceania Cruises reported that it's cancelled Insignia's next voyage, scheduled to depart Dec. 17 from Miami. The ship's engine room was the site of a fire while the ship was docked in St. Lucia late last week. That tragic incident resulted in the death of two contractors and one crew member. No passengers were injured in the engine room accident.
Today, the line said another hospitalized crew member has now been discharged from the hospital. All 656 Insignia guests are either back in Miami or already home.
Oceania had chartered aircraft to fly them home from St. Lucia to Miami over the weekend. The line's technical team is now onboard the vessel working with the ship’s officers and investigative authorities to assess the situation.
The line's latest statement on the situation is below:
"The investigation into the cause of the incident aboard Insignia is being led by the Marshall Islands with the assistance of the National Transportation Safety Board and the United States Coast Guard.
"Once the authorities have completed their work on the vessel, we expect Insignia to enter dry dock and undergo necessary repairs.
"Insignia’s December 17, 2014 voyage has been cancelled and guests/travel partners have been notified. Guests have the option to select from a range of alternative Oceania Cruises itineraries or receive a full refund. In addition, guests will receive a 25 percent future cruise credit. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate our guests’ understanding."
