Vote on Jacksonville Cruise Ship Terminal Postponed

February 13, 2009 By: David Eisen

A controversial bill that would rezone a portion of the Mayport fishing village in Jacksonville for a cruise ship terminal was sent back to committee for review Tuesday night, moments before it was to be voted on, reports The Beaches Leader.

The bill was sent back by Jacksonville City Council President Ronnie Fussell to the Land Use Committee (LUZ). Fussell’s office said the Jacksonville Port Authority requested the delay "in keeping with the commitment" by the port and the council to get more input before a vote is held.

No date has been set for a vote and the matter is in LUZ indefinitely.

Interestingly, the Mayport cruise terminal issue has found its way on film. A short documentary film, which opposes the proposed cruise ship terminal, was made by Neptune Beach resident Justin Anderson and Josh Hansbrough, reports The Florida Times-Union.

The film is said to be an advocacy piece in opposition of the Jacksonville Port Authority's $60 million project on the waterfront of the village, which was established in 1562.
