Puerto Rico Fiscal Crisis Continues

May 3, 2006 By: Mark Rogers Travel Agent

Puerto Rico did not receive approval from the legislature of a $638 million loan to cover the country's growing budget deficit. This resulted in the closing of non-essential government offices, and the laying off of 95,000 public employees, mostly in the Dept. of Education. Emergency services, including hospitals and police stations, remain open. The closings could remain in effect until July 1, when the new fiscal budget begins. The Puerto Rico Tourism Company claims that there is no major effect on the services used by tourists as Puerto Rico continues to be accessible and safe during this time. PRTC is monitoring the situation day-to-day. For updated information visit, [] or call the consumer hotline at 800-866-7827.
