After being delayed by a snowstorm, Québec City’s Winter Carnival Opening Ceremony took place Saturday, January 28.
The ceremony took place in the Place Loto-Québec, outside Bonhomme’s Palace. There, Carnival President Alain Winter and the spirit of Carnival himself, Bonhomme, welcomed a cheering crowd to Carnival. After that, a fireworks display MCed by Winter and Bonhomme set the party in motion.
Once the fireworks were completed, the crowd was treated to a dance party with live entertainment by fire dancers and musical acts Qualité Motel (Misteur Valaire), Quentin Mosimann (Do You St. Tropez – 2011), Alaclair Ensemble, Midaz (Live It Up – 2011), Lunice and Jaymark.
Throughout the evening, guests could also enjoy a nighttime version of many of Carnival’s attractions. The Loto-Québec Ferris Wheel was lit up and towering above the party in Place Loto-Québec, the sleds were still flying down the hill above the Place and the ice slide in the Place Desjardins was still drawing a large crowd.
The crowd in the Place Loto-Québec seemed quite young. Many families had come to the event, and a wave of school groups had descended on the city for Carnival. With so many young children around, the event seemed like a safe place for kids to cut loose and have some fun.
It’s back to our offices in New York for us tomorrow, but the Winter Carnival will continue through February 12. Still ahead is a canoe race on the St. Lawrence River next weekend, as well as night parades February 4 and 11.
