Turkish Airlines landed the first commercial flight to the Somalian capital of Mogadishu in more than 20 years, the BBC reports. The flight is the start of regular service to the city.
The flight will run twice a week, easing travel to a country that has not had a functioning government in more than 20 years as fighting between local factions has ravaged the area.
"We will connect the Somali people to the rest of the world. We hope that in the near future Somalia will become a stable place, a very normal country," an official from Turkish Airlines, Faruk Sazar, told the BBC after landing.
World leaders are working to help bring stability to Somalia by increasing aid to the African Union’s military operation, the BBC reports.
