The Delta Queen is set to be retired forever in 2008 if the exemption its been operating under for the past 36 years from the Safety of Life at Sea Act of 1966 is not renewed, which looks dubious. Representative Steve Chabot of Ohio has introduced a new House bill that would exempt the Delta Queen from the provisions of the 1966 act for another 10 years. On October 26, a press conference is scheduled in Cincinnati at 12:30 p.m. at the National Steamboat Monument on Mehring Way at the end of Broadway. Supporters of the boat are being implored to arrive early with signs aimed at saving the Delta Queen. For information on the press conference, call Rep. Chabot's office at 513-684-2723 or visit [www.save-the-delta-queen.com]. (DE)
