NEW YORK CITY – As part of our coverage of the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s annual Caribbean Week event last week, Travel Agent sat down with Glen Beache, minister of tourism for St. Vincent and The Grenadines, and discussed the potential impact the 2012 opening of the country’s first international airport will have on the destination.
As its stands right now, there are no direct flights to St. Vincent and The Grenadines from the northeast United States. But when the construction of an international airport at Argyle on the southeast coast of St. Vincent is scheduled to be completed in 2012, that will almost certainly change.
In fact, Beache says he plans on talking soon to some major carriers about agreeing to a direct New York flight to St. Vincent including JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines.
“There is no question that this could very well change the dynamic of the destination,” said Beache of the new airport.
Also, the destination is expecting a huge announcement very soon with regards to a new owner of the Raffles Canouan. Raffles pulled out of Canouan Island, but Beache told us a popular luxury name will take the property over.
“It’s definitely a brand everyone knows and will be a major positive for us when we can officially announce it,” he says.
