New St. Vincent and The Grenadines’ Resorts on Track for 2008

The Grenadine House reopened its doors in July 2007, after a seven-month refurbishment to restore this historic building. Built in 1765, it initially served as the private residence of the British Administrator in St. Vincent. Most recently, it operated as “Roy’s Inn” and “Camelot Inn” before developers, BM Resort Properties Ltd., took it over for renovations. Centrally located near Kingstown, Grenadine House offers just 20 boutique rooms, overlooking the capital with views of the neighboring Bequia.  It features two restaurants, including the fine dining Sapodilla Room, serving international cuisine with a Creole flair. Two event spaces can be utilized for conference facilities for up to 40 people, private parties and even wedding receptions with the services of celebrated wedding planner, islander Debbie Barbour.  Rates for the winter season start at $154 per couple, per night.

The Bequia Beach Hotel is also managed by BM Resort Properties Ltd. It is a seven-acre, 80-room resort development in Friendship Bay, Bequia.  At seven square miles, Bequia is the largest atoll in the Grenadines, and the Bequia Beach Hotel will be located along the white-sand bay on the southern coast of Friendship Bay.  This development combines three hotels, formerly known as Blue Tropic Hotel, Bequia Beach Club and Adam Villas. Phase one of Bequia Beach Club premiers December 2007, with 12 fully-appointed rooms; a gracious penthouse suite, with a private whirlpool and a private deck; and six bungalows, including three two-bedroom and three one-bedroom villas.  An infinity swimming pool, the Blue Tropic Café serving fresh Caribbean fare, and the Beach Bar completes this initial phase for 2007.  Starting rates are $300 per couple, per night.

Buccament Beach Resort, which will be St. Vincent’s first condo-villa resort, continues to make progress. Set along the leeward coast of St. Vincent, this  70-acre project includes 291 cabanas, four apartment blocks, and two hotel blocks. The adjoining spa resort called the Island Sanctuary, will house a full service spa and restaurant, as well as 40 luxury rooms.  The resort’s primary restaurant will be beachside with seating for 400; while a third dining option will occupy the top floor of the Sugarmill Casino, with views of the Caribbean Sea.  The fourth and most elaborate restaurant, together with a bar, will follow in mid-2008 in the form of a pirate ship, currently being built and inspired by the trio of “Pirate of the Caribbean” blockbuster movies filmed in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. A central swimming pool, with swim-up bar, children’s pool, waterfall, and spa baths complement natural water features at Buccament Beach Resort, including a protected lagoon equipped with berthing for 14 vessels and moorings for 10; as well as dive and sailing centers.  An 18-hole golf course, soccer and tennis academies, gymnasium, and conference facilities for up to 500 will complete the project.

New Airports Slated for St. Vincent and The GrenadinesThe $15.5 million dollar expansion of the airport on Canouan Island is nearing completion and on schedule to open in December.  The runaway has been extended to 5,900 feet, enabling the landing of most private jets, including the Airbus 319 and 320, as well as the Boeing 737.  The airport will also feature a new air traffic control center, improved airfield lighting, and an enlarged terminal building. With the country’s first international airport still four years away, the current E.T. Joshua Airport in being improved to accommodate a greater frequency of turbo prop planes from neighboring islands.  The $178 million Argyle International Airport, slated for 2011, will feature a 50,000 square-foot terminal, a 9,000-foot runaway able to accommodate Boeing 737 and 767, Airbus 300 and 320, as well as MD80 crafts.  It will effectively open up the country to jet aircrafts and non-stop flights from North American cities such as Chicago, Denver and Toronto.
