November 20, 2009 By: Kirk Cassels

You can wait until the 2010 Winter Olympics to head up to Whistler Blackcomb in Canada to get some exciting snow sports action, or you can head up now before the multitudes gather. The mountain has already surpassed the record for November snowfall, as more than 172 inches slammed the mountains by Thursday, November 19. afternoon. The previous record, set in 2006, was 164 inches.

The record is expected to grow as the weather forecast is predicting another 26 to 37 inches of snow over then next three days. The average annual snowfall at Whistler Blackcomb is 33.5 feet.

As the snow comes down, Whistler Olympic Park and the Callaghan Valley open this weekend to the delight of cross country skiers. One trail ticket allows you to ski at both locations which, collectively, offer 43 miles of cross-country ski trails and nine miles of snowshoe trails. Hours of operation will be 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. daily through January (9 a.m. - 6 p.m. in March and April). All trail access is through Callaghan Country base which is accessible via shuttle from Whistler each Friday through Sunday starting December 18 until January 17.

Celebrating the snowfall, Whistler is offering accommodation and lift ticket packages all winter long. Ski and stay packages are available starting from about $100 per person per day in November, December and January.
