First Look: Breckenridge's New Peak 6 Expansion (VIDEO)

Breckenridge Ski Resort in Colorado officially opened over 200 acres of its new 550 acre Peak 6 expansion December 25. The expansion includes new lifts, new terrain and the new signature run Bliss, a high-alpine, intermediate bowl run.

Here's a video tour of opening day.

Denver resident Ryan Chase and brothers Trevor and Riley Scannell from Littleton, CO were among the six guests who waited to get the coveted first chair at the noon opening of the Kensho SuperChair, a high-speed six person chairlift, topping out on Peak 6 at 12,300 ft.

The opening of Peak 6 is the first major terrain addition at Breckenridge since the Peak 7 expansion in 2002. The new area includes 400 acres of lift-served terrain and 143 acres of hike-to terrain, representing a 23 percent increase in the resort’s skiable acreage.

To celebrate the opening and the start of the season, Breckenridge recently brought back its popular First Tracks Fridays program. The program will allow guests staying at the official lodging properties of Breckenridge Ski Resort to get exclusive early on-mountain skiing and riding access one hour before the resort opens to the public every Friday morning throughout the 2013/14 winter ski season.

“Merry Christmas and welcome to Peak 6,” announced Pat Campbell, SVP & COO of Breckenridge Ski Resort at a ribbon cutting ceremony before the Kensho SuperChair officially started running. “This is an incredibly historic moment for Breckenridge Ski Resort … I know everyone here is going to love what they find up there.”

In other Colorado resort news, Vail recently opened its popular Back Bowls for skiing after a round of favorable early-season snowfall. With the addition of this terrain, skiers and snowboarders now have access to more than 2,000 skiable acres of terrain accessible by 19 lifts.
