New snow in Vail, Colorado and the Midwest brought some relief to U.S. ski resorts that had been suffering through a dry December and early January.
At a press event in New York last night, Travel Agent learned that Vail has seen six inches of new snowfall in the last 24 hours. At the same time, Weather.com reports that a low-pressure system over the Great Lakes has dumped between one and 10 inches of snow across the Midwest and parts of New England. According to Ski Vermont, some Vermont area resorts are experiencing between two and four inches of new snow as a result of this weather system.
Nevertheless, it remains to be seen if this will spell an uptick in snowfall for U.S. ski resorts. On Monday climatologist David Robinson of Rutgers University told CNN that weather patterns are moving too quickly to produce significant, consistent snowfall.
"It doesn't look like there's going to be huge improvement the next two weeks and we're getting halfway through winter by then,” Robinson told CNN. “But still, hope springs eternal for late January into early March. One would expect that we're going to see at least some interruption in this progressive fast-moving pattern."
