Vail Mountain Plans New Gondola

December 19, 2011 By: Josey Bartlett

Vail Mountain, the largest ski resort in the United States, makes plans to celebrate its 50th anniversary in December 2012 with the installation of a new, state-of-the art gondola. It will replace the Vista Bahn Express Lift (#16) in Vail Village.

The new gondola will commemorate the first gondola ever in that location with a plaque with the number “1” on it. It will be the highest gondola in the United States, with Wi-Fi access for those skiiers who can't resist the urge to check their email on the ride up. A couple more design notes: the new lift will have gondola chambers instead of chairs and will have an open-air terminal.

Located in the same spot as the existing 26-year-old lift, the new gondola will reach the same location at Mid-Vail, but will be 40 percent faster. The gondola will be installed spring 2012 and operational by opening day of the 2012-2013 ski season.
