Luxury hotels are stepping up their spa development as discerning guests demand more for their time and money. Courtesy of sister publication Luxury Travel Advisor, here are four new top-tier spas to recommend to your most demanding clients.

In the U.S.

As the finishing touch on a big renovation, the Mandarin Oriental San Francisco recently launched a brand new spa. The Spa and Fitness Centre has three swank treatment suites, a couple’s’ suite with twin beds, a relaxation lounge, and a manicure/pedicure area. The contemporary design includes Asian accents and museum-quality artwork. The spa menu offers holistic Asian-inspired treatments developed in consultation with specialists in traditional Chinese medicine.

While all of the treatments sound wonderful, we’re most intrigued by the Signature Therapies, which inculcate traditional Chinese medicine and master aromatherapists. Each treatment includes a body massage ritual with custom-blended essential oils, created uniquely for Mandarin Oriental. All begin with a private therapist consultation in order to determine each individual’s personal and current state of wellbeing. The treatment and oils are then tailored to each guest in order to leave the body, mind and spirit in perfect harmony. Guests are also provided with nutritional and exercise guidance, in order to extend the beneficial effects of the program at home.

To celebrate the spa’s opening, the Mandarin Oriental San Francisco has rolled out a special offer. For every 80-minute body massage booked, guests will receive a complimentary signature Mandarin Oriental Quintessence Body Scrub valued at $80. And guests booking a specialized facial will get a free Revitalizing Eye Treatment, valued at $50.

In Spokane, WA, The Davenport Hotel and Tower opened the Davenport Spa and Salon in September as an “environmental spa” with a range of European cosmeceuticals chosen for their low environmental impact and natural healing properties.

The spa and salon has rooms tailored for men, women, and couples; an aromatherapy steam rooms; and treatment rooms for skin, body, hair, and nails. (Nice Touch: The spa also provides complimentary valet parking, Champagne and other luxe accents.) Get in touch with Spa Director Tamara O’Connor ([email protected], 509-789-6898) with any questions.

The Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa opened its newest location at The Chatwal in New York City’s Theater District over the summer.

The Red Door Spa at The Chatwal has three treatment rooms, three private changing suites with steam showers, and a manicure and pedicure studio. The treatment menu includes skincare, massage and body treatments, as well as nail care and the popular Elizabeth Arden wax services. Special occasion hair and makeup will be available to hotel guests upon request.

We’re intrigued by the Red Door Signature Facial with PREVAGE and the Oxygen Infusion Facial, which provides oxygen and collagen to replenish and hydrate skin. Massage options include the Signature Stress Melter Ritual (which involves an olive oil skin softening scrub, aroma therapeutic body wrap and massage). Good to know: Red Door Spa will also oversee the hotel’s 24-hour fitness room, Jacuzzi plunge pool, and saltwater lap pool.

In Italy

The Monastero Santa Rosa Hotel and Spa on Italy’s Amalfi Coast is housed in a refurbished 17th -century monastery, and opened earlier this year. History buffs will appreciate its vaulted ceilings, ancient walls, and architectural details. (For the record, in English, “monastery” usually refers to a building for monks. In Italy, however, the term refers to a community of people bound by vows to a religious life.)

The hotel’s spa has a private Spa Suite, a “Spa within a Spa,” where groups of four (maximum) can hide away from the world for several hours. (Think a long weekend girlfriend getaway, a mother-daughter bonding experience or honeymooning couples unwinding after their wedding.)

The 860-square-foot double-heighted vaulted space includes a Rasul, Steam Room, Double Wet and Dry Treatment Couches, Manicure/Pedicure Relaxation Lounge, Private Dressing and Grooming Space and an outdoor private Garden Space.

Nice Touch: All of the treatments in the Spa use the products of Santa Maria Novella, which date back to the 14th Century of Italian monastic herbalists. The aromatics range from summery oils of lemon, bergamot, petitgrain and iris to such sweet-smelling herbs as rosemary, lavender, sweet orange as well as the special fragrance of pomegranate created for Catherine de Medici.

Treatments range from Santa Maria Novella facials (including back facials and facials for men) to honey hair and scalp treatments, and from massages, aromatic scrubs and wraps to manicures and pedicures.
