There’s a new kid in Cancun that is sure to make the others jealous. Travel Agent is just back from Nizuc Resort & Spa, the newest luxury resort to debut on Mexico’s Caribbean coast. This ultra-luxe, five-star resort is shaking things up in Cancun, and for the better.

Traditionally, luxury travelers seeking a slice of Mexico’s Yucatan coast had to head about an hour and a half south of the Cancun International Airport to Riviera Maya and Tulum, where they could lounge in the lap of secluded luxury. Not anymore. Nizuc Resort & Spa is just 10 minutes from Cancun’s airport, and delivers service on par with any of the established and respected five-star resorts to the south.

Sitting on its own stretch of land away from the hotel zone, Nizuc is a quiet, secluded oasis overlooking the ocean on an almost private strip of beach. Originally intended to be an Amanresort, the property has a decidedly Asian Zen quality that fuses beautifully with traditional Mexican seaside elements. The design of the resort incorporates the natural elements of fire and water, as guests will find stone fire pits and pools with lily pads and koi fish dotted throughout the resort.

Accommodations

We stayed in room #221, an Ocean Suite, with its own balcony with day bed, master bedroom, and expansive bathroom with walk-in shower and deep soaking tub. This was an entry level room, of which there are 44—they only become more elaborate from there. The resort has 274 suites. There are 29 pool villas, each with their own private plunge pool, tucked into private gardens. There are also Residence towers (which were originally intended for ownership when the property was going to be an Aman), which have an additional 201 suites. Note: All suites come with private butler service. Exterior suite features include private pools, outdoor gardens, decks, and ocean and mangrove views.

Nizuc Spa by Espa

Among the highlights of the resort is its Nizuc Spa by Espa—the first Espa branded spa on the Riviera Maya and only the second one in all of Mexico. This 30,000-square-foot space is completely devoted to physical and spiritual healing. Espa has created Mayan inspired therapies for signature treatments such as the Mayan Cacao Massage and the Nizuc Renewal Treatment and Nizuc Thermal Experience. Facilities include nine multifunctional treatment rooms with showers, one Asian treatment room, two Private Spa Suites with pool and outdoor deck, a beauty salon, nail bar and private pedicure areas, and the Spa Café, with fresh pressed juices and a whole foods dining approach.

The Nizuc Spa by Espa has several facilities devoted to wellness, such as the steam room.

Make sure to tell your clients to arrive for their treatment 45 minutes early so that they can fully partake in the hydrotherapy rituals. There is also a full fitness center.

Day and Night Activities

While we say Nizuc is the perfect place to be completely pampered, there is a menu of activities for those who need a little something extra. Non-motorized sports include paddle boards, kayaks and snorkeling tours, along with shore diving. There is also access to golf and fishing.

There are three fine dining restaurants: Ramona, the signature Mexican restaurant; Terra Nostra for Mediterranean fare; and Indochine, which serves a fusion of Asian favorites. We were able to sample food from each, and while all were out of this world, our favorite restaurant was Indochine. Be sure to try the sushi. Good to know: The casual fare at Nizuc is also incredibly fresh and delicious. Be sure to try the ceviche and quesadillas poolside. The resort also has a Peruvian restaurant, Ni, for lunch, and an all-day dining restaurant, Café de la Playa, which has one of the most elaborate breakfast buffets we have ever seen.

At night, visit Bar A-Kan, the lobby bar that has ocean views, or Havana Lounge, a cigar lounge with a selection of rums, tequilas and more. Terra Nostra also has its own rooftop bar with DJ entertainment.

Target Clients

The resort is family-friendly, but we highly suggest it for couples as it has a completely subdued atmosphere that lends itself to romance. Should your coupling clients need a little extra privacy, one of the two infinity pools is strictly for adults. There is a restaurant next to the adults’ pool, La Punta Grill & Lounge, which is also adults only. If your clients do have little ones in tow, there is the Winik’s Kids Club, which provides entertainment for children from four to 12 years old. Business travelers can make use of the Conference and Events Center on-site, which has more than 8,500 square feet of space and includes a ballroom, two conference rooms, lobby and outdoor function space.
