Sri Lanka Launches Signature Tours

August 24, 2010 By: Meagan Drillinger

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Washington, D.C. and Ambassador Jaliya Wickramasuriya have launched the first in a series of "Signature Tours" in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority.

This year, Sri Lanka was named the number one travel destination in 2010 by the New York Times and now the country wants to show Americans why. This first tour, in what is expected to be an annual event, is made up of 25 tourists, accompanied by Ambassador Wickramasuriya. The 12-day trip visits the capital of Colombo, the U.N. World Heritage Site of the Galle Fort and a visit to the countryside and the tea fields of Nuwara Eliya. The itinerary was compiled by Jetwing Travels.

Sri Lanka has been stable and peaceful since May 2009 and the number of tourist arrivals has increased by 50 percent during the first half of this year.
