Hotel Numbers Rise in Greece

June 29, 2009 By: Travel Agent Central Contributor Travel Agent

A study, conducted by Athens-based tourism and hospitality consultant Dr. Dimitris Koutoulas, has shown the presence of well-known hotels in Greece has grown, with four percent of the properties, which control 19 percent of the total room capacity, being affiliated with one of 113 brands. In 2005, only three percent of hotels and 17 percent of all room capacity could stake that claim.

Starwood now has six Luxury Collection properties and that number is set to increase when it opens two resort hotels— the Peloponnese in 2010 and launches the country’s first W Hotel in Athens in 2011.

Other brands that have properties in Greece include IHG’s InterContinental, Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn, Accor’s Club Med, Sofitel and Novotel, Hilton, Marriott and Hyatt.

Major European tour operators, such as Thomas Cook, Alltours and Rewe, have also introduced several of their hotel brands to Greece.

Mitsis, Grecotel Aldemar, Classical, Helios and Divani are among the major national brands while the new entrants to the scene include Aquis and Mareblue.
