Michelin Guide Awards Stars to Swiss Restaurants

November 30, 2009 By: Jena Tesse Fox

This year's Michelin Guide, published on November 17, awarded two stars directly to the cuisine of Anne-Sophie Pic at the Beau-Rivage Palace in Lausanne. Three new properties are included in the prestigious guide, once again putting the Lake Geneva Region (Canton of Vaud) at the head of the Swiss honors listing.

Michelin awarded Pic’s self-named restaurant two stars in her first year. Her team is led by Guillaume Raineix, the assistant chef at Valence, trained by Madame Pic.

Le Trianon, gastronomic restaurant at the Mirador Kempinski, earned its star after nine months of hotel closure for major renovations. Sylvain Trincaz, former assistant chef, now manages the restaurant.

At Saint-Saphorin, the Auberge de l'Onde gained one star for the cuisine of Patrick Zimmermann. Lastly, at Chardonne (Lavaux), David Tarnowski was named "New star hopeful" in his restaurant Le Montagne. This distinction paves the way for him to receive the award in the next edition of the guide.

Switzerland holds the world record for the number of stars per capita of population, with 19 Michelin stars shared between 12 restaurants.
