Thailand Tourism Remains Persistent

July 7, 2010 By: Meagan Drillinger

Let's face it - the news out of Thailand has been mixed, to say the least. Is the country in a state of emergency or is it recovering nicely?

While the New York Times reported yesterday that the government in Thailand has reissued its warning, The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is still hard at work promoting the destination.

For 2011, TAT will still use its "Amazing Thailand" theme, enhanced with the new tag line "Always Amazes You." The country is aiming for a goal of 15.5 million international tourist arrivals for the coming year, generating approximately $18.5 billion. This would be an increase of 9 percent from last year.

Suraphon Svetasreni, governor of TAT says, "For 2011, we will build on Thailand's many traditional strengths as a preferred tourist destination by branching out into new market segments such as green and sustainable tourism. We will also expand traditional channels into more online and social media activations, reaching the next generation of visitors who have a desire for more interesting and stimulating travel experiences."

The country's decision to focus more energy online is a smart one, seeing as the world has gone social-networking-crazy. TAT will create a video channel on YouTube featuring short documentaries, E-Books, E-Brochures, an iThai application for the iPhone and an Internet Call Center.

More traditionally, the country will still promote itself through TV commercials, print advertising, out-of-home media, brochures and posters.

Recent tourist surveys have shown that there is still a positive attitude toward Thailand. The protests are stabilizing daily and international governments are loosening their travel warnings. According to TAT, people still consider The Land of Smiles a friendly, exciting and welcoming place.
