Dutch Train Accident Injures Dozens

The Dutch government says initial investigations indicate a train passed a stop signal Saturday shortly before slamming head-on into another train near Amsterdam, killing one passenger and injuring dozens more, according to a report in the Toronto Star.

A double-decker intercity train collided with a commuter train Saturday evening, throwing passengers through carriages and against one another. The accident shut down train traffic between Amsterdam and the Hague, as well as to Schiphol airport.

More than 40 people were seriously injured and 16 remained hospitalized a day later. Most passengers escaped with minor injuries.
