The Theatres Trust Picks London's First 12 'Ecovenues'

May 12, 2010 By: Kirk Cassels

The Theatres Trust, the national advisory public body for theatres in England, has selected the first 12 venues participating in Ecovenue, an environmental sustainability project backed by the European Regional Development Fund. The project aims to aid London 48 theatres in reducing carbon emissions.

Successful venues in the first round are:

The Albany Theatre (Deptford)
Bush Theatre (Shepherd's Bush)
Chisenhale Dance Space (Bow)
Compass Theatre (Ickenham)
Drill Hall (Bloomsbury)
Duchess Theatre (Westminster)
Finborough Theatre (West Brompton)
Kenneth More Theatre (Ilford)
Little Angel Theatre (Islington)
Polka Theatre (Wimbledon)
Southwark Playhouse (Southwark)
Tara Studio (Wandsworth)

These 12 venues are the first of four groups of theatres to receive free theatre-specific, environmental business support from The Theatres Trust through the Ecovenue project. Each will receive a free energy assessment and a Display Energy Certificate that publicly displays how much energy the theatre uses. They will be helped to create and develop environmental policies, and receive specialist assistance in monitoring energy, water use, waste diversion and procurement.

Their reductions in carbon emissions will help to deliver the Mayor of London's Green Theatre Plan. This aims to help theatres achieve reductions in emissions by 60 percent from 1990 levels by 2025.
