Alaska Airlines Begins Removing Virgin America Presence

According to a statement posted on Alaska Airlines’ website, the carrier began removing all branding and signage for Virgin America on April 24.

The only branding and signage will now be for Alaska Airlines. Signs and screens will all change to Alaska branding at curbside locations, lobbies, ticket counters, gates and baggage areas, according to the statement.

“While there will be some Virgin America painted aircraft still flying for a period of time after April 25, tickets will be sold only under the Alaska name,” according to the statement.

On April 24, the carrier was slated to complete physical changes at 29 airports around the U.S. and Mexico that are served by both Alaska and Virgin America.

Back in 2016, the Antitrust Division of the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) approved Alaska Airlines’ acquisition of Virgin America. The approval did not require Alaska Airlines to divest any assets, but the airline did agree to implement changes to its codeshare agreement with American Airlines.

News of the merger first broke a couple of years ago, to the delight of several Hawaii specialists Travel Agent spoke to. In a reaction piece we conducted back in 2016, many of the Hawaii advisors Travel Agent interviewed were excited about the possibility of more flights to the destination.
