According to a report released by the European Cruise Council, the Costa Crociere S.p.A. Group led other cruise lines in Europe in 2010 based on revenue, the number of guests and fleet size. Consolidated revenues rose by 12 percent in fiscal year 2010 to just under US$4.3 billion, while the total number of guests increased 18 percent to 2.15 million guests over 26 ships.
According to the European Cruise Council report, in 2012 there were approximately 5.5 million European cruises, which was a 10 percent increase over 2009. The number of passengers departing European ports rose to 5.2 million, up 7.2 percent. The industry had an approximately $50.3 billion impact on the continent’s economy, including more than $20 billion of direct spending.
The Costa fleet currently has 26 ships in service across its three brands: Costa Cruises, Aida Cruises and Iberocruceros. Four ships are scheduled for delivery by 2013, two for Costa Cruises and two for Aida Cruises. The new flagship, Costa Favolosa, is due at the end of the month. It will be named in Trieste on Saturday, July 2.
Costa Cruises’ ships have sailed for more than 60 years, visiting 250 destinations throughout the Mediterranean, northern Europe, the Baltic, Caribbean, South America, United Arab Emirates and Indian Ocean.
