Hawaii Hotels Start 2007 on an Up Note

Hotels statewide saw relatively flat occupancy levels for the first week of the New Year, but posted an average 19 percent rise in average room rate compared with the same week a year earlier, according to the latest Hawaii Hotel Industry Snapshot issued by Honolulu-based Hospitality Advisors. The average statewide room rate was $248.64 for the period of December 31, 2006 through January 6. Indeed, rates were up on the four largest islands, with Maui posting a gain of 24.1 percent to $322.60, edging out Kauai's room-rate climb of 23.9 percent to $263.06. As for occupancy, Hawaii's statewide average for the week was 81 percent, well ahead of the national average of 46.2 percent. Nationally, the average room rate rose by 5.6 percent compared with the same week a year earlier to $97.85.
