International Visitation Down in September

International visititation to the U.S. has decreased year-to-date as arrivals in September 2009 decreased 1 percent when compared to September 2008, according to the Department of Commerce. More than 4 million international visitors traveled to the U.S. in September 2009. Total visitation in the first nine months of 2009 was down 8 percent compared to the same period in 2008. Business travel to the U.S. continued to decline at a greater rate than leisure arrivals for the first nine months of 2009. Yet amidst the general decreases, there was an increase of visitors from a handful of countries either for the month or year to date.

In September 2009, visitation was up from Canada, Japan, Korea, Switzerland, Venezuela, Colombia, Dominican Republic and Australia, but down for the first nine months of the year. Meanwhile, the numbers were up from China, Argentina, Brazil, and the Bahamas in September and for the first nine months of 2009.
