Report: Hacker Shows Way to Clone Passport Card Data

February 10, 2009 By: Joe Pike

This original story was written by a close friend of Travel Agent’s, Dan Kaplan, senior writer for SC Magazine, and we thought our readers would find it interesting. It originally ran on www.scmagazineus.com  on February 6.

According to SC Magazine, a computer security researcher demonstrated over the weekend how simple it is to read and clone RFID tags from U.S. government-issued passport cards. According to the story, Chris Paget recently posted a YouTube video that chronicled him driving around San Francisco, where he successfully cloned two RFID tags from U.S. Passport Cards, first released last fall, in 20 minutes.

According to the published report, Paget, who detailed his findings this past Saturday at the ShmooCon 2009 hacker conference in Washington, D.C., used an antenna and a $250 Motorola card reader that he purchased on eBay, where he works.
