Stat: Airline Profits Soar

U.S. airline profits surged toward the end of 2013. According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), airlines reported a net profit of $7.3 billion in the fourth quarter of 2013, up from a loss of $188 million in the fourth quarter of 2012. In addition to the after-tax net profit based on net income reports, the scheduled service passenger airlines reported a $2.7 billion pre-tax operating profit in the fourth quarter of 2013, up from $557 million profit in the fourth quarter of 2012 (pictured).
