Top Travel Stressors - Exercise and Eating Healthy Outweigh Airport Security

Stretching before a runThe Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is in hot water after the senate passed their budget proposal, which will raise passenger security taxes with the ultimate goal of keeping low wait times throughout airports nationwide. While travellers certainly appreciate less time spent in line at airport security, a new survey that examines what causes the most stress for frequent travellers revealed that airport security is not at the top of the list.

TripIt, the leading mobile travel organizer from Concur (Nasdaq: CNQR), conducted the survey, and asked how stressful certain travel-related activities are. Results showed that the number one stressor for frequent travelers is exercising (67 percent), followed closely by eating healthy (66 percent). Coming home to things waiting ranked number three on the top-five list of stressful activities, trailed by airport security as number four, and driving in an unfamiliar city as number five. The majority of travelers did not find checking in to the airport, the flight itself, picking up a rental car, or communicating with partners and/or kids to be stressful.

To help travelers exercise and eat healthy while on the road, TripIt has a number of tips. For travelers trying to eat well, TripIt recommends carrying healthy portable snacks, like whole almonds or a banana to curb cravings. When ordering from a menu, substitute an appetizer or small plate for the entrée. When a routine workout is out of the question, opt to walk or take the stairs, instead of the people mover or escalator. Aim to increase your steps with an activity tracker or app, and take the scenic route. Often time the hotel concierge can provide a map of local running routes or trails, and sometimes hotels loan guests workout gear, yoga mats or shoes. In a pinch, use the hotel room to do crunches, push-ups, and chair dips any hour of the day.
