ARC reports that the consolidated dollar value of airline tickets sold by U.S. based travel agencies increased 6.92 percent year-over-year in the first five months of 2012 compared to the same period in 2011. This is a 15 percent gain over the same period in 2010. January through May 2012 ARC reports ticket sales hit $39.3 billion, compared to $36.7 billion in 2011, and $34 billion in 2010.
Year-to-date passenger segments for the first five months of 2012 increased slightly by 0.45 percent – at 150.1 million segments, compared to 149.5 million in 2011 – while reflecting a 1.76 percent decrease from the same period in 2010, ARC says. Ticket transactions for January through May 2012 were up, at 1.04 percent over the same period in 2011, while slightly down by 0.64 percent compared to the same period in 2010.
ARC's results are based on sales data ending May 31, 2012 from 14,412 U.S. retail and corporate travel agencies, satellite ticket printing offices, and online travel agencies. The data does not include sales of tickets purchased directly from airlines. Total sales are equal to the total amount paid for a ticket, which includes taxes and fees. Average daily sales for the calendar month totaled $16,613.
