UAL Reports Loss, Fuel Woes

UAL, parent of United Airlines, said Monday that its first-quarter loss rose 1.3 percent as the company experienced record high fuel prices and struggled with one-time reorganization items. But even without those reorganization charges, United, which exited bankruptcy on Feb. 1, posted a very big quarterly loss—$306 million up from $302 million a year earlier. Analysts say the fuel costs are the big issue, and while rising ticket prices are helping, those won't go up much in the short term.
