The travel scene was abuzz this week with reaction to a controversial Woman's Day article entitled "10 [and later, 9] Things Travel Agents Won't Tell You." Industry reaction to the inaccuracies in the article was so heated that the magazine was forced to retract a portion of the story, and the publication has since promised to work with ASTA on travel stories in the future.
In cruise news, a strike by German lock workers impacted river cruises over the weekend and early in the week. This week also saw the release of the final report on the Carnival Splendor fire. Critical findings included that a 15-minute delay in activating the ship's Hi-Fog system gave the fire time to spread.
This week also saw further developments for the Costa Concordia as salvage crews continued their efforts to right the wreck before it becomes damaged beyond recovery. Representatives of the salvage company reported that they would only have one chance to float the ship as the wreck slowly crushes itself under its own weight. The company expects to make the attempt sometime in mid-September.
In Caribbean news, we saw a report from our 30 Under 30 agents from our second annual Destination Immersion summit in Barbados. Agents got a chance to check out the island and talk selling the destination.
